Scale Insects

Scale insects (Coccoidea) are small, immobile pests that feed on plant sap. They are often covered with a protective waxy coating, which makes them hard to detect and control. Commonly found on ornamentals, fruit trees, greenhouse crops, and houseplants, scales weaken plants by extracting nutrients, producing honeydew, and sometimes transmitting plant pathogens. Heavy infestations can reduce growth, deform foliage, and diminish fruit quality.

Scale insects vary in appearance depending on species and life stage. Adult females are typically stationary, while the mobile nymphs (“crawlers”) spread to new feeding sites.

Recognize the signs of infestation

Look for immobile, dome-shaped insects on stems and leaves. Honeydew and sooty mold often signal infestations.

  • Waxy or armored coverings: Adults appear as small bumps or shells on stems, leaves, or fruit.
  • Yellowing or wilted leaves: Infested plants often show chlorosis or drooping due to sap loss.
  • Honeydew deposits: Sticky excretions can coat leaves and stems, leading to sooty mold growth.
  • Stunted growth: Heavy feeding reduces vigor and overall plant size.
  • Visible nymphs or crawlers: Tiny mobile stages move slowly across plant surfaces.
  • Leaf drop or fruit deformation: Severe infestations can cause premature leaf shedding and damaged fruit.
