Application Instructions
Handle containers carefully to avoid stressing or damaging the insects. Ensure optimal conditions of 20-30ºC and relative humidity of 60-70%
Distribute the contents directly on or at the base of infested plants.
Important! Avoid chemical treatments before and after releasing Orius, as some pesticides may be toxic to these insects.
Adults feed on pollen and can be applied preventively to flowering plants. Adding banker plants like ornamental pepper or alyssum supports faster establishment and population growth.
Preventive application rates* generally range from 1-5 individuals per m², and 5-10 individuals per m² for light to severe infestations. Repeat introductions every 1-2 weeks, until control.
Recommended use: March to October.
*Introduction rates may vary depending on specific crop conditions, the type of pest present, and the level of infestation.
Storage Instructions
Use upon receipt to ensure maximum efficacy. If needed, keep for a maximum of 2 to 3 days at 10-12°C, away from light.
Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Description
Orius insidiosus is a species of predatory insect commonly known as the “minute pirate bug.” This generalist predator feeds on several small insects such as mites and aphids, but it has a strong preference for thrips.
It is native to the Americas, but has been introduced to other parts of the world as a biocontrol agent for pest insects. These bugs are often used in agriculture to control pest populations, as they are effective at eliminating many common pests. They are generally considered beneficial insects, as they do not harm plants or animals other than their intended prey.
