Red Mites

Red Mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) are blood-feeding ectoparasites that primarily infest poultry, laying hens, and backyard flocks. They feed mostly at night, hiding in cracks, perches, and nest boxes during the day. Although they do not transmit many diseases directly, heavy infestations can cause stress, anemia, reduced egg production, and decreased overall flock health.

Red mites reproduce quickly under favorable conditions, with eggs hatching into larvae and nymphs within a few days. Populations can escalate rapidly if not managed effectively, especially in warm, humid environments.

Recognize the signs of infestation

Inspect perches, cracks, nest boxes, and eggs for small red mites or blood spots, and monitor nighttime bird activity to detect infestations early.

  • Nighttime activity: Mites feed on birds primarily at night, leaving tiny red blood spots on feathers, skin, or eggs.
  • Anemia signs: Pale combs or wattles in chickens indicate blood loss from heavy infestations.
  • Restlessness: Birds may appear agitated, scratch excessively, or peck at perches.
  • Feather damage: Loss or thinning of feathers from repeated scratching.
  • Egg abnormalities: Small blood spots on eggshells may be visible.
  • Visible mites: Small red or dark-colored mites can sometimes be seen on feathers, especially around vent, under wings, and on the neck.
