Fungus Gnats
Fungus gnats are small, dark-colored flies, usually 2–4 mm long, commonly found in greenhouses, indoor plants, and moist soil environments. While adult fungus gnats do not directly damage plants, their larvae, main damaging stage, feed on organic matter and plant roots, which can cause significant harm to seedlings, young plants, and container-grown crops.
Fungus gnats thrive in moist, organic-rich soil and can reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions. Multiple generations can occur within a single season, leading to persistent infestations.
Recognize the signs of infestation
Yellow sticky traps capture adults, while potato slices placed on soil surface reveal larval presence.
- Wilting or poor growth: Larvae feed on fine roots, damaging the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients. This can cause seedlings or young plants to appear weak, stunted, or wilted.
- Yellowing leaves: Nutrient uptake is impaired due to root feeding, leading to pale or yellowing foliage.
- Root damage: Feeding larvae create small tunnels in roots, sometimes causing root tips to rot. Severely affected plants may have a poorly developed root system.
- Presence of adult flies: Small, dark flies hovering around soil surfaces or plant foliage indicate an active population. Adults are weak fliers but are a sign that larvae are present in the growing medium.
- Soil surface damage: In heavily infested pots, larvae may be visible on the soil surface, especially when soil is disturbed or too wet.
