Corn Borer
The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) is one of the most destructive pests of corn and other crops. The larvae, which are creamy white to pink with small dark spots, bore into leaves, stalks, and ears. This feeding weakens plants, reduces photosynthesis, and increases susceptibility to diseases. While corn is the primary host, the corn borer can also attack potatoes, peppers, beans, and other crops.
The larval stage causes the most economic damage, as boring into plant tissues reduces yield and quality. In corn, infestations can result in broken stalks, dropped ears, and reduced grain production.
Recognize the signs of infestation
Pheromone traps detect adult moths. Look for egg masses on the underside of corn leaves and larval entry holes in stems.
- Leaf feeding (early stage): Small, irregular holes or “shot holes” in leaves caused by young larvae chewing through the tissue.
- Silk and tassel damage: Larvae may feed on silks, reducing pollination success.
- Boring in stalks and ears: Older larvae tunnel into stalks and ears, weakening plants and making them prone to lodging (falling over).
- Frass deposits: Sawdust-like droppings near entry holes indicate larval feeding inside stalks or ears.
- Broken stalks or dropped ears: Severe infestations can cause plants to snap or ears to detach prematurely.
- Presence of larvae: Creamy to pink larvae with dark heads, often hidden inside stalks or ears.
