White Grubs and Soil Pests
White grubs (e.g., European chafer, Japanese beetle larvae) are the larval stage of various beetles, including the European chafer (Amphimallon majale) and the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica). These C-shaped, cream-colored larvae live in the soil and feed primarily on plant roots, particularly turfgrass, ornamentals, and agricultural crops. While adult beetles can damage leaves and flowers, it is the larval stage that causes the most significant underground harm.
White grubs are among the most destructive soil-dwelling pests in lawns, nurseries, and crop fields, as they reduce plant health, vigor, and yield.
Recognize the signs of infestation
Digging soil samples reveals C-shaped larvae with brown heads and six legs. Turfgrass that pulls up easily is a key sign of grub damage.
- Wilting and thinning turf: Grass or crops appear water-stressed despite sufficient watering because root systems are damaged.
- Yellowing and irregular patches: Lawns and fields may show yellow or brown patches that expand as feeding continues.
- Loose or spongy turf: Severely infested turf can be lifted or rolled back easily, as roots are eaten away.
- Stunted or dying plants: In crops, seedlings and young plants may fail to establish due to root destruction.
- Animal activity: Skunks, raccoons, and birds may dig in the soil to feed on grubs, creating further lawn or field damage.
- Visible larvae in soil: White, C-shaped grubs are often found when digging in affected areas, especially near root zones.
