Leek moth

The leek moth (Acrolepiopsis assectella) is an invasive pest originating from Europe that now affects onions, leeks, garlic, and other allium crops. The main damage comes from its larval stage: small caterpillars that mine into leaves, stems, and bulbs. Their feeding weakens plants, reduces yield, and leaves visible scars that lower market value. Infested bulbs and leaves also become more susceptible to rot and secondary pathogens.

Adult leek moths are small brown moths with white banding across their wings, but they cause no direct damage. The larvae are cream-colored with a brown head, and they feed inside leaf tissues or bore into stems and bulbs, making detection difficult until damage is visible.

Recognize the signs of infestation

Look for leaf mines, frass, and larvae inside stems. Pheromone traps detect adult moth activity.

  • Leaf mining: Young larvae tunnel within leaves, leaving narrow, translucent mines.
  • Feeding holes: As larvae grow, they chew through leaves, leaving irregular holes and tears.
  • Silken webbing: Larvae may spin silk inside mined leaves.
  • Bulb damage: In onions and garlic, larvae may tunnel into bulbs, causing softening, rotting, and unmarketable produce.
  • Frass deposits: Small greenish droppings inside mines or around feeding sites.
  • Weakened plants: Heavy infestations can cause wilting, reduced growth, and secondary fungal infections.
