Clothes Moth and Indian Meal Moth

Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella) and Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella) are common household and storage pests that can cause significant damage to textiles, stored grains, nuts, and processed foods. Clothes moth larvae feed on wool, silk, fur, and other natural fibers, creating holes in fabrics, while Indian meal moth larvae infest grains, cereals, nuts, dried fruits, and pet food, leaving silk webbing and frass in stored products.

Adult moths themselves do not feed on materials but are responsible for laying eggs, which hatch into destructive larvae. Both species can reproduce multiple times per year under favorable conditions, making early detection and management crucial.

Because chemical treatments are often ineffective in practice — they rarely reach hidden larvae and do not affect eggs — these pests are best managed with natural, pesticide-free solutions.

Recognize the signs of infestation

Look for visible signs left by larvae, since they cause most of the damage. Choose natural, pesticide-free methods that reduce risks and protect storage environments.

Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella)

  • Irregular holes in fabrics: wool, silk, fur, or other natural fibers.
  • Larvae present: small cream-colored caterpillars hiding in folds or seams.
  • Silk tubes or cases: fine webbing or cocoon-like structures on clothing or shelves.
  • Powdery frass: tiny grains near damaged areas.
  • Small beige moths: adults flying weakly in closets or storage areas.

Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella)

  • Silk webbing in stored food: cereals, nuts, dried fruit, pet food.
  • Clumped or webbed products: grains stuck together with fine silk threads.
  • Visible larvae: small cream-colored caterpillars in containers or crawling on surfaces.
  • Adult moths near pantries: small brown/orange moths active at dusk.
  • Frass and residues inside packaging: signs of internal infestation.
