Aphids

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that reproduce rapidly and form colonies on leaves, stems, and flower buds. They vary in color (green, black, brown, yellow, or pink) and many species can transmit plant viruses. Aphids include a variety of species that differ in size and preferred host plants. Small aphids include peach and melon aphids, medium-sized aphids include cannabis aphids, and medium to large aphids include potato, foxglove, and pea aphids. Each species feeds differently and can impact crops in unique ways, making targeted monitoring and control essential.

Recognize the signs of infestation

Look for clusters of aphids on young shoots and undersides of leaves. Sticky honeydew and the presence of ants are common signs of infestation.

  • Slow or stunted growth: When aphids are present in large numbers, they
rob the plant of nutrients needed for growth. This can cause plants to grow more slowly, stay smaller than usual, or appear weak.

  • Plant deformation, distorted or rolling up of leaves: As aphids feed, they can distort the shape of leaves. Leaves may curl, twist, or become puckered, making the plant look unhealthy.

  • Yellowing or discolored leaves: Aphids feed on the plant’s sap, removing essential nutrients. This can make the leaves turn yellow or pale, especially the younger, more tender leaves at the tips of stems.

  • Sticky residue (honeydew): Aphids excrete a sweet, sticky liquid called honeydew. It can coat the leaves and stems, making them sticky to the touch and attracting ants.

  • Sooty mold: Honeydew can also promote the growth of a black mold on leaves and stems. While the mold itself doesn’t feed on the plant, it can block sunlight and reduce the plant’s ability to produce energy.

  • Virus transmission: Aphids can carry and spread many plant viruses as they feed. Infected plants may show additional symptoms such as mottling, yellowing, or distorted growth, which can reduce crop quality and yield.

  • Wilting or plant death: In severe infestations, plants may wilt, lose leaves, or even die because of the combined stress of sap loss, mold growth, and virus transmission.
