Fungal diseases
Fungal diseases are caused by a wide variety of fungi that infect plants, affecting leaves, stems, flowers, fruits, and roots. They are among the most common plant health problems in greenhouses, nurseries, crops, and gardens, leading to reduced growth, yield, and quality. Fungal infections often develop in humid, warm, or poorly ventilated conditions, and can spread rapidly through spores carried by air, water, tools, or insects.
Common fungal pathogens include Botrytis, Powdery Mildew, Fusarium, Alternaria, and Rhizoctonia. Symptoms and severity depend on the pathogen, host plant, and environmental conditions.
Recognize the signs of infestation
Regular scouting for lesions, mold growth, and wilting. Lab testing confirms pathogen species when needed.
- Leaf spots or lesions: Discolored, necrotic, or water-soaked spots on leaves, often with a characteristic shape or color depending on the fungus.
- Powdery or downy growth: White, gray, or purple fungal coatings on leaves, stems, or flowers.
- Wilting or yellowing: Roots or vascular tissues infected by fungi may reduce water transport, causing drooping or chlorosis.
- Stem or fruit rot: Soft, mushy areas on stems or fruit caused by tissue decay.
- Mold or mildew on soil surface: Visible fungal growth may indicate high humidity and poor drainage.
- Reduced vigor or yield: Overall stunted growth, premature leaf drop, or decreased fruit production.
