Mealybugs
Mealybugs are soft-bodied, segmented insects covered with a white, waxy substance. They are common pests of greenhouse crops, ornamental plants, fruit trees, and indoor plants. Both nymphs and adults feed on plant sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to serious yield or aesthetic losses. Mealybugs reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions, often forming large colonies that are visible to the naked eye.
Recognize the signs of infestation
Look for cottony clusters on leaves, stems, or roots. Sticky honeydew and black sooty mold indicate infestations.
- White, cottony masses on plants: Mealybugs secrete wax, creating fluffy, white patches on stems, leaves, and fruit. These are easy to spot, especially on tender growth or in hidden crevices.
- Yellowing or distorted leaves: Feeding removes sap from the plant, causing leaves to turn yellow, curl, or become deformed.
- Stunted growth: Heavy infestations divert nutrients, slowing growth and reducing plant vigor.
- Sticky residue (honeydew): Mealybugs excrete a sugary liquid called honeydew, which can coat leaves and stems, attracting ants and promoting sooty mold growth.
- Sooty mold development: Honeydew fosters black mold on leaves and stems, reducing photosynthesis and further weakening the plant.
- Premature leaf or fruit drop: Infested plants may shed leaves, buds, or fruit early, impacting crop yield and quality.
- Visible insects: Adults and nymphs are often found in clusters in plant crevices, leaf axils, or on roots of potted plants.
