Product description

Description

Coleomegilla maculata, commonly known as the Pink-Spotted Lady Beetle, is a native North American beneficial insect and an effective generalist predator widely used in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

Both larvae and adults actively feed on aphids and other small, soft-bodied insects, contributing to rapid suppression of pest populations in a wide range of crops. Unlike many other lady beetle species, C. maculata can survive on plant pollen when prey is scarce, allowing it to establish and persist in crops over time. This trait makes it particularly suitable for preventive introductions and for early-stage curative control.

Well adapted to Canadian growing conditions, Coleomegilla maculata performs effectively in field crops, greenhouses, and protected cultivation systems, offering growers a reliable and sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides.

Targeted crops

  • Greenhouse vegetables: cucumber, tomato, pepper, eggplant
  • Field vegetables: potato, beans, peas, sweet corn
  • Strawberry
  • Ornamentals (greenhouse and outdoor)
  • Cannabis

Targeted pests

Primary targets

  • Aphids, including:
    • Green peach aphid (Myzus persicae)
    • Potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae)
    • Pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum)

Secondary / opportunistic feeding

  • Thrips
  • Eggs and young larvae of various insect pests
  • Other small, soft-bodied insects

Note: Coleomegilla maculata is not intended as a stand-alone control for spider mites or adult thrips.

Application Instructions

Introduce preventively or at the first signs of aphid activity.

Release adults directly into the crop, distributing insects across multiple release points for optimal establishment. Open containers gently within the crop canopy to allow beetles to disperse naturally.

Important notes

  • Avoid releases during extreme heat or direct sunlight.
  • Avoid the use of broad-spectrum insecticides before and after release to ensure establishment.
  • In greenhouse or indoor systems, consider physical containment strategies as adults are strong flyers.

Storage Instructions

  • Use within 24 hours of receipt for best results.
  • Short-term storage only, in a cool, dry place between 10–15°C.
  • Keep containers out of direct sunlight.
