Description
Sentry, the entomopathogenic nematodes of the Steinernema Feltia species are biological agents that control larvae of the potting fly, also known as black fungus gnat or sciarid fly. This agent is ideal for quickly controlling moderate to severe infestations. Distributed at the juvenile stage (infectious larvae), they measure only 0.4 to 1.5 mm long and can be observed with a 20X magnifying glass. Once in the soil, they penetrate the host insect through its natural openings (mouth, respiratory and anal orifices), feeding on the tissues of the pest and releasing bacteria present in their intestines. These bacteria reproduce in the blood and cause the death of the host within 24 to 48 hours.
The majority of pest insects feed on algae and decomposing organic matter. However, a few species of the Bradysia genus prefer to feed on plant tissues or fungus tissues in mushroom beds. They thus cause significant growth problems and promote the spread of fungal diseases such as Pythium, Fusarium and Rhizoctonia.
Entomopathogenic nematodes are used in soil, fiber or rock wool cultures. They are popular in aeroponic and hydroponic systems.
